The Best Texas Holdem Online Poker Rooms

by Henri Junttila

New Texas Holdem online poker rooms are born every minute. Okay, not every minute but too often, because most of them are failing miserably. There are actually only about 20 poker rooms that have acceptable traffic, the rest you should probably avoid.

So then, how do you tell the good online poker rooms from the bad? This is exactly the question I want to answer with this article. So many new players are being tricked to these new rooms which have no traffic and have horrible customer service.

Traffic - The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing a poker room to play at is traffic. How many players are there? You should usually see a lobby full of games, especially Texas Holdem. For example, if I go to the top 5 rooms I can see at least 5 Texas Holdem tables at limits ranging from $25 to $2000 buy-in. When You go higher than that the games usually become harder to find. So before you deposit, open the client of the poker room and look at the traffic, if it is very small you should probably avoid it.

Game Variety - Most players get sick of playing Texas Holdem all the time, so another aspect of a well run online poker room is game variety. The usual games spread are Holdem, Omaha, Stud, Single-Table Tournaments (Sit & Go’s) and Multi-Table Tournaments (MTTs). The bigger rooms also spread games like Razz, HORSE, HOSE, 2-7 Triple Draw. But if you’re only looking for a solid Texas Holdem online poker room then look no further than the Holdem tables :-)

Graphics - Are the graphics good? Does it run smoothly without crashing? Most of the Texas Holdem Online poker rooms reveal their flaws after about 15 minutes of playing. I can only play at about 5 poker rooms because most of them just drive me crazy. A few annoyings details are: weird layout, bad graphics, slow software, crashing, only allowing 3 tables at the same time and so on.

Rake - How much does the poker room take from the pot? The standard rake is 5% up to $3. For example, a standard Texas Holdem online poker room takes $0.05 per $1 that goes in the pot, usually there’s a cap at around $3. This is the industry standard, most big rooms have the same, some have less. If you’re going to try the smaller rooms, be sure to check their rake so they aren’t robbing you.

Financial Security - This is very important for me when choosing an online holdem poker room, if my money isn’t safe then what good does it do if I play there? If I win I want to be able to take my money out. Again, if you go to the online poker rooms with most traffic your money will often be as safe as they can be.

Deposit & Withdrawal - Make sure you are able to withdraw with the same method that you deposited with. You do not want to find out that the deposit options are normal, but when you withdraw there is a whole new set of rules to play by.

Sign-Up Bonus - It’s fun to get some extra money in your pocket! I always enjoy the occasional bonus when I sign-up to a poker room although I do not look for it. Because most of the bonuses are hard to clear anyway, especially the ones on the smaller poker sites. Don’t dismiss them though, just make sure there’s enough traffic and that the bonus is easy to clear before playing at a small poker room just to clear the bonus. When I just started out playing I had many experiences where I found a great $1,500 sign-up bonus only to find that it takes 4 months to clear, so I just ended giving up on it and wasting my time. Avoid my mistakes! :)

And that concludes my list of things you should look for in a Texas Holdem Online poker room. Hopefully this article helps you avoid some of the mistakes I did and some of the money I lost :-)

If you are really serious about playing in SNG tournament then you should seriously consider visiting a poker website which offers mentoring and coaching to players. There are several such sites that you can be find on line and which will provide you with SNG strategy tips and hints in order to help improve your game.

One reason for using a mentor is that they will actually ghost your tournament play and help you with any strategy along the way. So as you play a tournament you will be on the phone with your mentor and they will watch the tournament table. You will tell them what cards you have and then you will discuss what strategy you are going to use together. The reason why this method is much more helpful than any book advice is it is real time and also highly practical for you whilst you are playing.

Whilst playing the first 3 to 4 levels of a game you should play a fairly tight strategy and only play the good cards in an early position. Then play some more speculative hands in a later position where you can see a cheap flop (suited connectors or small pairs).

Then as you progress from the early stages in to the middle stages of a tournament you should start to play a little more aggressively with lesser hands.

Finally as you get into the late stages of a tournament you should now start to get very aggressive in the way you play. It is important that you make sure you play aggressively on the bubble especially if you have shorter stack than your opponents.

If you happen to notice a player during a game who is playing fairly tight and is not taking many chances until they are actually in the money then watch what they are doing. Make sure that you think about what they may be holding before you decide to commit a lot of your chips against them.

However the best SNG strategy to use if you are just trying to make money is to play very tight throughout the tournament. In most of the tournaments that you enter you will find you get enough hands early on to give you a good stack of chips which will last you. Then once you are close to the money then loosen up your game.

What’s Holding You Back From Making a Killing Off Poker SNGs?

The game of Sit N Go or as it is sometimes referred to as SNG has blazed a path in the online poker world with vengeance. So just what is SNG? It is a small 6-30 person tournament where the prize pool is simply what everyone has paid in order to enter it. Normally the prize pool money will be divided between the top three finishers at the end of the tournament, but it does not actually depend on the result of an individual game.

One of the benefits of taking part in a Sit N Go tournament is that it gives players a taste of what it is like to play at the final table of a large tournament without having to do all the hard work to get there. For many who are half decent poker players taking part in SNG’s can be very profitable even if they only make some money half of the time. Today there are many poker professionals who make their living off of taking part in Sit N Go tournaments and through nothing else. Below are some tips which may help you to master Sit N Go and put you on your way to becoming a poker pro as well.

1. The most important thing you should do before you start playing is to divide the game in to separate stages, Early, middle and late and each of these stages should then be approached in a different way.

Early Stages
During this stage you should only play the monster hands. So it is important that you hold on to the Queens, Kings and Aces. Also be very selective about the hands that you play and spend time watching the betting patterns of your opponents. As most players taking part in SNG’s will start off very aggressive (due to small blinds) this is a great time to just watch and learn.

Middle Stages
After about 4 people have been eliminated from the tournament you can then start to play a few more hands. However, you should still be very selective what hands you play since you have yet to make some money.

Late Stages
When you get down to the last 4 people in an SNG tournament you find that funny things begin to happen. Those players who were once aggressive will begin to tighten up in order to make money. But as you have been tight all along it is now time for you to make your move. So loosen up and push your chips and then watch everyone around you begin to fold. However, be careful and play smart and you will soon stack up a lot of chips before it gets down to the final three players. The best way to be when it comes to the final three is the one who has the most chips. So play smart but also play aggressive as well.
